Guide for Los Angeles small businesses

How to show up on Google Maps in Los Angeles: a Google Business Profile checklist

Complete, accurate information helps Google understand the business—and helps customers choose it. There is no shortcut that replaces eligibility, relevance and real reputation.

First, confirm the business is eligible

Google Business Profiles are intended for businesses that meet customers in person during stated hours, either at a real staffed location or by traveling to customers. Online-only businesses are generally not eligible. Do not use a virtual office simply to create a Los Angeles address or open duplicate profiles for neighborhoods without separate staffed operations.

A service-area business that does not receive customers at its address should hide that address and list the cities or postal areas it genuinely serves. Google currently allows up to 20 service areas and advises keeping the overall territory within roughly two hours of the base in normal circumstances.

Use the real business name

Enter the name used on your website, branding, invoices and customer materials. Do not add phrases such as “best web designer Los Angeles” unless those words are truly part of the established name. Keyword stuffing can trigger edits or suspension and creates inconsistent citations elsewhere.

Keep the same name, phone and website across the profile and major directories. Minor formatting differences are not a crisis, but customers and platforms should clearly see one business identity. For a service-area business, use Los Angeles, CA without publishing a residential street address.

Choose categories for the actual work

The primary category should describe the main business, not every customer you hope to reach. Add relevant secondary categories for substantial services. Avoid unrelated categories added only for visibility. Categories influence which searches the profile can match, so accuracy is more useful than quantity.

Review the category when the business changes, but do not constantly edit it. For example, a web designer that also manages social media might use Web designer as primary and carefully selected marketing categories as additional options.

Complete the practical fields

Add a local phone number that reaches the business, the correct website URL, accurate hours, opening date and service area. If you claim to be open 24 hours, someone should genuinely be available to serve or respond during those hours. Do not use aspirational hours that create missed calls and unhappy customers.

Write a plain-language description of services, customers and geography. Google prohibits links in the business description and discourages promotional price-led language. Use the dedicated website, services and post fields for those details instead.

Build a useful services list

Add the services customers actually request, using the language they understand. A contractor might separate kitchen remodeling, drywall repair and finish carpentry. A med spa might organize consultations and approved treatments. Include concise descriptions, and add prices or starting prices when they are stable and helpful.

Match important services with dedicated website sections or pages. The wording does not need to be mechanically identical, but the profile and site should tell the same story. Do not create a long list of locations disguised as services.

Add honest, high-quality photos

Upload a recognizable logo, a representative cover image and real photos of the team, work, location, equipment or process. Google recommends clear JPG or PNG images without excessive alteration. For a service business, finished projects and people doing the work are usually more persuasive than generic stock imagery.

Add new photos when there is meaningful new work. Organize the source files with descriptive names for your own workflow, but remember the visual itself must carry the proof. Never upload client photos without permission.

Create a review process

Ask real customers for reviews shortly after a successful job, when the details are still fresh. Use Google’s review link or QR code and make the request easy. Do not offer incentives, gate unhappy customers away from Google, or write the review for them.

Respond to reviews calmly and specifically without revealing private information. Thank positive reviewers, and address problems with an invitation to continue the conversation offline. More genuine reviews and positive ratings can support prominence, but the goal is an honest record, not a sudden artificial burst.

Use posts and social links where available

Business Profile posts can share updates, completed work, new services or timely information, with an action button leading to a relevant page. Avoid putting unverified phone numbers or other contact details in the post text because Google may reject them. Older undated posts may be archived.

Social profile links are available only for some regions and profiles. When the field appears, add the canonical Instagram, Facebook or LinkedIn URL. Keep those profiles active and consistent with the business details.

Connect the website properly

Use a direct HTTPS website URL and add tracking parameters when you want to distinguish Business Profile visits in analytics. The landing page should load quickly on mobile, repeat the core service and city naturally, show the phone number, and provide a clear action.

Create focused service pages only when they contain useful original information. Do not publish a copied page for every Los Angeles suburb. Add your local business information to the site, submit a sitemap in Search Console and make sure important pages can be indexed.

Understand what ranking depends on

Google explains local results mainly through relevance, distance and prominence. You can improve relevance with complete, accurate information. You cannot control a searcher’s distance. Prominence develops through real-world reputation, reviews, links and other signals. There is no legitimate payment or setting that guarantees the top map position.

Check the profile from the owner interface rather than repeatedly searching your own keywords. Track calls, website visits and qualified inquiries over time. If an edit is pending, allow the review process to finish before changing the field again. Consistent maintenance beats frantic weekly rewrites.
